Marrakech, a former imperial city in western Morocco is also known as the ―Red City or ―Pink City due to the distinctive hue of the local earth used in the construction of its many brick buildings. The medina, is a densely packed, walled medieval city dating to the Berber Empire, with maze like alleys where thriving souks (marketplaces) sell traditional textiles, pottery and jewelry. Your Riad will be located in the heart of the Medina and within walking distance of the historic Jemaa el-Fnaa square, which by day is a market place but at night is a place of non-stop entertainment.

Dinner and overnight stay in Marrakech.

MARRAKECH-HIGH ATLAS-TELOUAT KASBAH-AIT BEN HADDOU-OUARZAZATE

DAY 2

Pick up in the morning in a private 4×4 vehicle and depart to Ouarzazate driving through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, that with 2.260m is the highest point in our country. We´ll enjoy beautiful landscapes from the viewpoints on the way and make some stops to take pictures of the berber villages. Then we´ll take a small road that goes to the Telouat Kasbah.

In the afternoon we´ll continue through the Ounila Valley, where you can see the small berber villages and adobe houses that speckle the mountains. Reaching Ait Ben Haddou, an ighrem (fortified village), and traditional Mud Brick city on the edge of the High Atlas Mountains. It is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and has been featured in many films including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones and many others. After lunch in the village we continue on to Ouarzazate. Ouarzazate is a city south of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, known as a “The gate of the Desert”, its name comes from a Berber phrase meaning "without noise" or "without confusion". Its huge Taourirt Kasbah, home to a 19th-century palace, has views over the rugged local landscape.

Dinner at the hotel where we´ll spend the night.

OUARZAZATE-DRAA VALLEY-MERZOUGA DESERT-CAMEL RIDE AND NIGHT IN BERBER TENT CAMP

DAY 3

After breakfast we´ll depart towards the Draa Valley, created by the Draa River, Morocco’s longest river. Some stops to take pictures and enjoy the view of the spectacular kasbahs and berber villages that dot the road as well as the beauties of the Draa Valley. You´ll have some free time for lunch in Nkob or Alnif, and then, after two hours driving, we´ll reach the wonderful Merzouga sand dunes the “Desert of powdery sand dunes”. Here we transfer to camels (dromedaries) and take a sunset camel ride through the sand dunes to a traditional Berber camp nestled in the heart of the desert. Enjoy some spectacular views over the sand dunes as the sun sinks below the horizon before enjoying a hearty Berber meal and a campfire this evening, often with local musicians helping enhance the atmosphere. You spend this magical night sleeping in comfortable Berber tents (jaima) under a blanket of stars.

MERZOUGA DESERT-NOMAD FAMILIES-KHAMILIA VILLAGE-RETURN TO ERG CHEBBI

DAY 4

Early start to watch the sunrise over the spectacular Merzouga dunes around the camp. This is a once in a lifetime experience that you will not soon forget and one of the high points of our journey. We will return by camels (dromedary) to the town of Merzouga where we will have breakfast and start a full day of desert adventures. First, we’ll head towards Erg Chebbi, location of the Large Dune, Morocco’s biggest, around 250m in height. Departure in 4×4 along part of the route of the Paris/Dakar Rally itinerary, with the mountains along the border of Morocco and Algeria on the horizon.

We will visit the Khamlia Village whose inhabitants are direct descendants from the Gnawa tribe, originating from sub-Saharan countries such as the Sudan, Mali and Niger, who were forcibly moved from their homelands across the Sahara to Morocco as part of the worldwide slave trade. Here we will relax with some mint tea while listening to authentic Gnawa spiritual music played by local musicians. Next, we will visit a traditional nomad family and learn about some of their customs. After lunch we will return to the hotel and you will have the afternoon free to visit the village, climb the dunes or just relax.

Dinner and lodging at the Hotel

MERZOUGA DESERT-ZIZ VALLEY-MID ATLAS MOUNTAINS-CEDAR FOREST-IFRANE-FEZ

DAY 5

After breakfast we start our last day to the north through the Tafilalet palm grove, the biggest in the world and famous for its dates. You´ll see thousands of palm trees along the 20km of road. This way leads us to the Ziz Valley, which river comes down from the high Atlas and feeds the palm grove. Here we make a stop and from this high viewpoint, enjoy a magnificent view of the valley and the town of Aoufous. We make another stop in Midelt, just in the heart of the Atlas where you´ll have free time for lunch and rest for a while. In the afternoon we continue our way through the UNESCO Cedar Forest of Azrou where, if we are lucky, we´ll see some Barbarian monkeys. The next place we´ll visit is the city of Ifrane, situated in the northwestern slope of the Middle Atlas at 1630 meters above the water level. Its broad avenues, its urban development with perfect cleanness, the gardens, the green areas and its architecture make this city look like a Swiss town. Ifrane feels misplaced in Morocco. That’s why it´s named the Moroccan Switzerland, and if that´s not enough it has an important ski resort, Michlifen. We arrive at Fez late in the afternoon, where we will stay overnight in a very nice and comfortable Riad.

FULL DAY EXPLORING FEZ

DAY 6

MARRAKECH

DAY 8

In the morning visit to the Medina at Marrakech with a local guide. We begin unearthing the secrets of Marrakech, starting in the medina, the old walled section of town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We'll marvel at the city's architectural jewels, including the soaring Koutoubia minaret and Dar Si Said; housed in a palace, it is among the most beautiful of its kind in the world. We'll then continue to the Bahia Palace, an exemplary specimen of privileged life in the 19th century.

Then we visit Djemaa el-Fna, Marrakech’s main square, which is filled with orange juice stalls and vendors, and is well worth returning to in the evenings when it is packed with street food stalls, fire-eaters, mime artists, snake charmers and street musicians performing at every turn. We will also visit the 16th century Saadines Tomb, where Saadian royalty found their final resting place, and the magnificent Majorelle Botanical Gardens, inspired by French artists and fashion designer Yves St. Laurent.

The afternoon is then free to explore the Medina's fabled, labyrinthine souks and do some souvenir shopping. In the middle of the old market (Rahba Lakdima) you'll find queues of stalls filled with jars upon jars of spices, petals, bark and leaves inside
